Rare
Hoya insularis is a beautiful and somewhat rare species of Hoya native to the Philippines and other Southeast Asian islands. This particular Hoya species is highly valued by houseplant collectors for its unique appearance and relatively easy care, though it can be a bit slower growing compared to other Hoya varieties. The leaves of Hoya insularis are long and thin, resembling blades of grass. They are typically dark green, often with a slightly reddish or bronze hue on the edges, particularly on new growth.
Hoya insularis has fairly typical Hoya care needs. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate a little direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon. It’s best to avoid harsh, direct midday sunlight as it can scorch the leaves. Like most Hoyas, Hoya insularis is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. Overwatering can be detrimental, so it's important to ensure the plant is planted in well-draining soil mix that allows for good airflow to the roots.
Cactus or succulent potting mixes with added perlite or orchid bark work well. During the growing season, a diluted balanced fertilizer can be applied once a month to support healthy growth.
